Crazy Impossible Nonsense

“God specializes in impossible situations.” - Gary Smalley

We go through life in various seasons. These seasons can sometimes be defined as crazy or impossible or they make no sense. Because of this, they tend to confuse us, or make us worry, or put fear into our hearts. But the Bible has shown us so many crazy impossible no sense stories that these are all signs that God is at work. In fact, they are just screaming that God is at work. Jesus had his share of crazy, impossible no sense situations that I want to share and hopefully they give you hope for your situation.

When Lazarus died, Jesus said “..for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come let’s go see him.” (John 11:15). It sounds crazy that he is glad he wasn’t there. Lazarus was his best friend. If anything, it makes more sense to want to be there to prevent it from happening. Just like it makes more sense to not have your car break down in the first place, or to have never met him so you don’t feel the pain you feel right now. But he knew something we didn’t. God was at work. Even though Jesus arrived after Lazarus had been buried for four days, God was at work. Even after everyone told him it’s too late, God was at work. Even though his tomb was sealed up, God was at work. We all know this story, yet for some reason we still feel our situation is way too crazy. We still don’t believe that God can handle it because it looks over. God is at work. “Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe.” (John 11:40)

When a crowd of five thousand people showed up to see Jesus, they were hungry. “When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.” (John 6: 5-6) He took food from a little boy’s lunch bag which contained five loaves and two fish. It seems impossible to feed that many people on so little, but God takes what you already have to do the impossible. The solution also already existed before the problem itself did. However, God might test you to see how you’ll handle it. Will you trust in Him and keep pushing through or give up? Nothing is impossible when it comes to God. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.” (John 6:12-13) God not only fulfills the need but it will overflow.

For his first miracle, Jesus saved a wedding. His mother told him they ran out of wine. “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” (John 2:4) Why should this concern him? It’s a wedding. No one is dying right? But what happens next. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.” (John 2:7) We think God is not in the little things. He cares that you have a good vacation with your family. That dinner that you’re cooking for your family with love, God cares about that. God cares about the big and the little. He cares that you have an enjoyable drive to work and back. It makes no sense to us, but He does. “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” (John 2:10) Not only does God do it, He does it really well!

Though the moment seems crazy, though it looks impossible, though it makes no sense that God would even involve himself, God is at work. He wants you to depend on him and to trust him. He’s doing this for your good and for your purpose. And no matter what happens God will come through in the end. So praise God for that crazy impossible nonsense! Thank him for it because good is on the way. God thrives in the impossible, lives for the nonsensical and guides through the crazy.
